UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned church.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
