No less than 64 people died in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials said. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.

Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 security personnel entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements adjacent to the city's international airport is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Residents have likened the hillside area - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the operation, in addition to multiple guns.
