Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The former official announced he would withdraw from public duties after Congressional panel disclosed his regular messages with the financier

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.

The economist remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the potential of the organization, and look forward following their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Message Exchange

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the economist communicated with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it accepted the economist's determination to depart.

"We value his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the directors," OpenAI commented.

Congressional Action

This development arrives after both chambers of Congress decided on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its files on the case.

The bill will subsequently head to the office of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he intends to endorse the legislation, after modifying his position on the subject following pressure from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked messages disclosed by the legislative panel recently referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.

The messages showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the academic to influential world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were released with the wider community, he said he took "total ownership for my poor choice to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild trust and fix connections with the individuals most important to me".

Career Background

Summers held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, announced that the economist was ceased to be connected with the institution.

He entered the directorate of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
