Chicago White Sox Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial $34 Million Contract.

In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract bringing in the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The contract grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's compensation may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the MVP award.
  • $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for placing fourth through 10th.
  • $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

His deal also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and allows him to become a free agent at the termination of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows are also entitled to a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to represent the White Sox, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, enters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.

Having earned league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, eclipsing the all-time record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His last year was limited to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite fanning often, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. He started playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 win. The following day in the final against the USA, he blasted a equalizing home run in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The power hitter is slated to be formally introduced at a introductory event on Monday.
