Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of undesired offerings can be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Auction

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based fine art auction house. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.

Storage Room Holdings

The presents reportedly stored in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been gathering dust over a long period.

A complete inventory remains officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion centered on if a legal value limit was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

A Global Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the strangest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Political Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, mostly from within her party, with winning over international counterparts and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.

The forthcoming sale represents a novel approach to manage the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a political career.
